2/18/09. Night of epicness as Take Back NYU decides to take over Kimmel’s 3rd fl Market Place.
Here’s the link
What are people’s take on this incident anyway? While there are some individuals who are all riled up with all this that’s happening the very moment, it seems like there’s also a good (if not bigger) student population who have the “WTF” bubble floating above their heads. Since I have no desire whatsoever to copy and paste the looooong list from TBNYU’s website, I’ll just use the short one composed by NYULocal.
Specific ones that I find the most… perplexing
- Creating a committee that can override administrator’s financial decisions. (like they’ll REALLY agree to that)
- Annual scholarship to 13 Palestinian students. Why 13? And even though it’s a good cause, why does it seems like jumping on the bandwagon with the Scotland (or was it UK) school that did something similar not very long ago?
- Tuition Stabilization for all students. (LOL)
- General public access to Bobst. If they’re your friends just do the normal sign in procedure, and those who really need Bobst usually are those with easy access anyway. (since they are most likely to be affiliated with another city school).

This is just plain ridiculous. In case TBNYU haven’t noticed, not that many students truly care about what’s going on. While on my way down from the 4th floor computer lab since the elevator will only respond to the 1st floor call, I saw several people on the 2nd and 1st floor getting interviewed by unidentified press (WSN? most likely. NYT? I don’t think they care all that much), and unhappy grumbling masses who can’t access the market place at this point. Up here on the 8th floor though, people’s lives are still going on, and everyone’s just going about their life. Yes, I agree, it’s a good thing if the University will be transparent with us, but if they don’t want to, then so be it. It saddens me that this might be the climax before the closing chapter of TBNYU.
Props for making it inconvenient for the welcome center and HS kids and their parents though. We will now en route to the Tisch building on Broadway while avoiding Kimmel at all costs, at least for the day. (or better yet, just to show how active the students truly are)
Update 11:52
Now that the more I think about this, it seems like we’re in a pickle/catch 22 here. Now that TBNYU has raided Kimmel, if things go south and no one supports them, NYU admin will probably take this into their advantage in the future. Now, if things DO go through, no it’s impossible, because of the numbers of demands, it’ll be embarrassing for the admins to actually give them all of their requests. So thanks to you guys, we’re quite screwed right now. Personally, I’m with “All Hell Breaks Lose” at 12:15PM. See you there in 15 minutes.
