Julie and Julia

Just got back home after watching Julie & Julia, and thought that it’d be a great idea to blog about the food that I’ll be making in the kitchen. So here’s to the new life of this blog!

TONIGHT’S MENU
Sauteed chicken breast with creamy gorgonzola sauce
Steamed broccoli with creamy gorgonzola sauce
Quinoa

Creamy gorgonzola sauce
I thought I’d be creative and use up the greek yogurt sitting in the fridge. Loosen the greek yogurt with milk if necessary, and add a tablespoon of olive oil, then add to a small sauce pan with heated butter. Mix with a spatula, careful not to boil or simmer the mixture. Add in crumbles of gorgonzola, be careful not to add in too much since that blue cheese is fairly powerful. The amount of gorgonzola should provide enough flavor that you will not need to add salt to the white sauce.

Accepted Students Day

As I sit here on the 8th floor of Kimmel. I can overhear the voice of the tour guide drifting towards me. Silly man, did you really think that telling the group that there’s a Starbucks at west 4th and your coffee habit is really going to lure them into accepting the offer?

WTF are you talking about

“something that could only be said in the 16th century. again, this is not true but you can make a similar argument about the 12th century or the 20th century. So Montaignes writes a book on himself, about himself, to change himself. How does writing change you? Speculate about that for two minutes…”

Seriously. Seriously? Kids, be warned.

Should I be surprised?

You are The Lovers

Motive, power, and action, arising from Inspiration and Impulse.

The Lovers represents intuition and inspiration. Very often a choice needs to be made.

Originally, this card was called just LOVE. And that’s actually more apt than "Lovers." Love follows in this sequence of growth and maturity. And, coming after the Emperor, who is about control, it is a radical change in perspective. LOVE is a force that makes you choose and decide for reasons you often can’t understand; it makes you surrender control to a higher power. And that is what this card is all about. Finding something or someone who is so much a part of yourself, so perfectly attuned to you and you to them, that you cannot, dare not resist. This card indicates that the you have or will come across a person, career, challenge or thing that you will fall in love with. You will know instinctively that you must have this, even if it means diverging from your chosen path. No matter the difficulties, without it you will never be complete.

Between Love and Goodbye

Although the Times gave it a thumbs-downish/lackluster review, I fell in love with the soundtrack the moment I saw the the trailer.

Got a secret, can you keep it? Taking this one to the grave

Ah, secrets, the subject that never ever really gets old, ever. I was accompanied by Ethanol Vodka and occasionally Mary Jane this past Friday night at a dorm room party, where I again saw this fairly attractive Asian human being whom I’ve met before. We chatted every now and then throughout the night before I left and went back to my room around dawn. Somewhere in between meeting and leaving I learned from tipsy K-doll that, *gasp*, this lovely human being is GAY.

During which time I also found out that I have a mutual friend with Lovely Hottie from his home town. And tonight, thanks to facebook, I got my chance to chat with this mutual friend again since some very long time ago, like last fall. I couldn’t control my laughter as this friend says it again and again to me that L.H. is straight, is straight, is straight. Now, I suppose I’m not really keeping it a secret by writing it on my blog, but that’s pretty much my story.

til next time?

Take Back Urinetown?

I don’t know how many of you have seen the Broadway musical Urinetown, the Musical, but what is happening at Kimmel right now really REALLY reminds me of this musical.

Urinetown, the Musical, takes place in a town like any other town, except this town has experienced 20 years of drought, and water is scarce. To save the town, Urine Good Company, or UGC for short, was created by Mr. Cladwell and it taxes the people in the town for peeing, and the public toilets are called “Public Amenity.”

The musical began with Bobby Strong seeing his father taken away by the cops for peeing in public since he couldn’t afford the P.A.s. A girl by the name of Hope, Cladwell’s daughter, meets Bobby Strong by chance, and Hope provided Bobby a vision for a brighter tomorrow. The next day, Bobby leads a group of poors and takes over a P.A. (doesn’t it sound awfully familiar?). It is also worth mentioning that a portion of the poor showed no sign of good moral character. Eventually Bobby attempts to negotiate with Mr. Cladwell, who offers Bobby lots and lots of money, only to have Bobby refuse the offer, and so the cops threw Bobby off of the roof of UGC, sending him off to Urinetown.

The story doesn’t end there, but as of right now I see a funny-but-not-quite-so parallel between TBNYU and Bobby Strong. It’s naive of them to allow anyone who will follow, and thus resulting in the hooded men holding the Anarchist banner. TBNYU, it might be a good idea to withdraw before NYU metaphorically throw you off of the roof of Kimmel Center.

(Tear) Gas ‘em ALL

It’s been more than 24 hours since the occupation, and the TBNYUers are still in there.

Local’s link

Yes, perhaps I said something in my previous post that all has been happening is quite amusing and hilarious, and I happily thought that things were over with when the people left the balcony at around six. Guess not. To the people of TBNYU: In this school, there are many horrible horrible people, such as me, who wish bad things to befall you types.

I’m going to say some horrible stuff, but just know that usually people like me only generate such vile thoughts when we are annoyed. We are the kind of students that don’t care about the school’s price tag because our parents are rich, and thus we DON’T CARE, and enjoys things the way they are. So if we truly handle things the “democratic” way you would like, there will be just as many, if not more, of us as there’ll be of you. Now just leave the god damn premise so there’ll still be chance for me to read my paper while eating lunch at the market place tomorrow.

That said, good luck with whatever the hell you choose to do, because whatever the outcome, there will not be another similar climax from you guys in the (near or otherwise) future.

Free students are free! But wait, aren’t we already?

2/18/09. Night of epicness as Take Back NYU decides to take over Kimmel’s 3rd fl Market Place.

Here’s the link

What are people’s take on this incident anyway? While there are some individuals who are all riled up with all this that’s happening the very moment, it seems like there’s also a good (if not bigger) student population who have the “WTF” bubble floating above their heads. Since I have no desire whatsoever to copy and paste the looooong list from TBNYU’s website, I’ll just use the short one composed by NYULocal.

Specific ones that I find the most… perplexing

  • Creating a committee that can override administrator’s financial decisions. (like they’ll REALLY agree to that)
  • Annual scholarship to 13 Palestinian students. Why 13? And even though it’s a good cause, why does it seems like jumping on the bandwagon with the Scotland (or was it UK) school that did something similar not very long ago?
  • Tuition Stabilization for all students. (LOL)
  • General public access to Bobst. If they’re your friends just do the normal sign in procedure, and those who really need Bobst usually are those with easy access anyway. (since they are most likely to be affiliated with another city school).

2/19/09

This is just plain ridiculous. In case TBNYU haven’t noticed, not that many students truly care about what’s going on. While on my way down from the 4th floor computer lab since the elevator will only respond to the 1st floor call, I saw several people on the 2nd and 1st floor getting interviewed by unidentified press (WSN? most likely. NYT? I don’t think they care all that much), and unhappy grumbling masses who can’t access the market place at this point. Up here on the 8th floor though, people’s lives are still going on, and everyone’s just going about their life. Yes, I agree, it’s a good thing if the University will be transparent with us, but if they don’t want to, then so be it. It saddens me that this might be the climax before the closing chapter of TBNYU.

Props for making it inconvenient for the welcome center and HS kids and their parents though. We will now en route to the Tisch building on Broadway while avoiding Kimmel at all costs, at least for the day. (or better yet, just to show how active the students truly are)

Update 11:52

Now that the more I think about this, it seems like we’re in a pickle/catch 22 here. Now that TBNYU has raided Kimmel, if things go south and no one supports them, NYU admin will probably take this into their advantage in the future. Now, if things DO go through, no it’s impossible, because of the numbers of demands, it’ll be embarrassing for the admins to actually give them all of their requests. So thanks to you guys, we’re quite screwed right now. Personally, I’m with “All Hell Breaks Lose” at 12:15PM. See you there in 15 minutes.

Summer @ NYU…

Is perhaps many young college students’ academic getaway (excluding, of course, people who actually goes to NYU during the academic year), and so here I go again, writing about pretty petty little things that will undoubtedly gain a big readership due to the lacking or outdatedness of NYU housing info on the internet.

Of course, there’s always the housing website, but they will never tell you the shitty points of each dorm on there now will they?In this post, I’ll summarize several apartment styles that are offered.

Gramercy Greene (yeah yeah swoon in the sound of the name)

-Gorgeous. You might even be able to get away with thinking that you’re on a MTV reality show featuring college students. I’m going to skip the talk about its view on the Williamsburg bridge (only available on, let’s say, 15th and higher) and granite countertop finish and touch screen microwaves. Do you really need all that for your six weeks stay? Consider the distance between Greene and WSP (Washington Square Park), and the lack of activity in the area, I wouldn’t really wanna stick with this place; there are busses (route E) that pick up the residents though, so if you can bear the 5-10 minutes ride everyday, then knock yourself out.

University Court

-Haven’t been here, but from what I’ve heard Gramercy Greene would be the evil stepsister and University Court is the forgettable Cinderella without the fairy Godmother. Avoid at all cost.

Third North

-Soviet style kitchens and varying suite sizes with a close proximity to St. Marks and 10-15 minutes walk to WSP. Just hope you’ll get lucky with the size. (I’m currently living here and have ended up in one of the smaller/est suites possible in this dorm.

Palladium

-It has everything. Despite being built atop of a once glorious disco/night club The Palladium, Palladium hall has everything one could ask from a dorm. The suites I’ve seen appear to have a similar layout to that of UHall. With amenities such as gym, pool, cafeteria, study lounges, and a trader joe’s in the same building (not connected, but a part of), the place should be able to fill all needs a student should have.
